Beaus Lines of the Toenails

Beaus lines are grooves or depressions in the toenails that appear at the base of the lanula following a traumatic event that has momentarily halted nail growth. Beaus lines can be observed in newborns a s abnormal condition. The condition will resolve itself naturally a majority of the time, usually after the baby is 30 days old. The lines progress distally in healthy nail growth and eventually smooth out on the nail edge.

Beaus lines develop when the toe nails split or tear. Beaus lines can be repaired with nail glue and polished with clear polish. In some instances of Beaus lines the grooves become unilateral lines. These lines develop following a fracture of the distal radius and need to be cast.

Beaus lines may be an indicator of a lack of nutrients to the body, a deficiency in iron, a deficiency in zinc, or anemia. Beaus lines may also indicate a metabolic condition like type 1 or type 2 diabetes. There are a number of treatments for beaus lines. Some of the treatments include…
  • Soaking your nails each time you wash you feet.
  • Soaking your feet in a warm salt water solution, cleaning and drying them with a towel, and wearing loose fitting shoes and socks. Constricting the toes range of movement may also be at the cause of some of the cases of beaus lines.
  • Moisten your cuticles and nails before going to sleep.
  • Be conservative in your use of nail polish remover as overuse can dry out the nails.
  • Apply a moisturizer to your nails each time you wash your feet.
  • Bandage the toe if you stub it or hurt it.
Beaus lines develop as the result of diseases such as diabetes, syphilis, peripheral vascular disease, myocarditis, or zinc deficiency. Beaus lines also develop as the result of contagious illness such as measles, scarlet fever, mumps, high fevers and pneumonia.

For the treatment of beaus lines nails, select a good moisturizer that will help to lessen the grooves in the nails and revitalize them. A good moisturizer will lessen the cracking, chipping, and breaking of Beaus lines nails. A good moisturizer will also help to prevent the development of cracks and lines in the nail and keep them healthy.
