Recommended Food Servings for Diabetics

Below is a description of each food group and the suggested renage of servings for each group.

Starches and Grains
Grains and starches at the bottom of the food pyramid contain mostly carbohydrates. The foods that make up those are bread, cereal, rice and pasta. The foods in this cluster are mostly rye, grains, wheat and oats. Other foods in this group are starchy vegetables such as peas, potatoes, beans, corn, dried beans, black eyed peas and pinto beans. The high concentration of carbohydrates put these vegetables at the base of the pyramid.

Choose 6-11 servings daily from this group. Serving sizes are
  • 3/4 cup cereal without milk
  • 1 cup of winter squash
  • 1 slice from a loaf of bread
  • 1/3 cup of pasta or rice
  • ½ cup of an English muffin or pita bread
  • ½ cup of yam, potato, cooked beans, or corn
  • 1 6 inch tortilla
  • 1 ounce of a bagel slice
  • ½ cup of cooked cereal
Vegetables
All vegetables have a low concentration of fat and are healthy choices as a low calorie snack. Vegetables are also loaded with healthy fibers and minerals. This set includes cabbage, sorrel, chickory, kale, spinach, carrots, lettuce and tomatoes. Choose at least 3 servings daily from this food group.

Fruit
The third layer includes fruits. Fruits also contain carbohydrates. Fruits have an abundance of minerals, vitamins and fiber. This section contains oranges, apples, strawberries, cantaloupe, blackberries, grapes, bannannas and peas. Choose 2-4 servings daily from this food group.

Dairy
Dairy products are full of calcium and protein. Dairy products contain a wide variety of vitamins. Choose dairy products low in fat and saturated fat. Select 2-3 servings daily from this group.

Meat Substitutes and Meat
The meat layers contain chicken, beef, eggs, fish, tofu, cottage cheese, peanut butter and dried beans. Foods in this group are high in protein and minerals.

Alcohol, Fats and Sweets
Foods that contain a lot of sugar are found in this group. Foods high in sugar and in this group include cookies, candy, Doritos and other chips, pastry and fried foods. Keep your intake of these foods low and save them for special occasions.
