Treatment for Flat Feet. Flat Foot Treatment
Most healthy individuals have a normal healthy arch that enables them to walk properly. Individuals with flat feet don't have the normal curved arch. Flat footed individuals may be affected in one or both flat feet.
Normal individuals will have a space between the balls of their feet when they are standing. This space is called the "arch." With flat feet, there is no arch between the ground and the inside of the foot. Flat feet are sometimes referred to as fallen arches.
People with flat feet may experience a variety of symptoms due to the disorder. Without the normal arch, individuals may experience corns and blisters beneath the soles of their feet. The arch section may become painful or irritated. A flat-footed patient may go through sneakers or shoes in a short period of time.
A flat footed person may not have a normal walking motion. This improper gait may cause foot pain as well as pain in the knees, hips, and back.
Sources of Flat Feet
- You may inherit this condition from your mother or father.
- You may have had an injury that has damaged a tendon in the foot such as the tibilias posterior. This ruptured tendon can cause flat feet.
- Certain diseases like spina bifida, cerebral palsy, and muscular dystrophy can cause flat feet.
- This can be caused by conditions that make the foot roll too much.
Therapy for Flat Feet
- Wear shoes wide enough to allow for a free range of movement.
- Seek professional support to treat some of the symptoms of flat feet such as blisters.
- Get fitted for custom made orthotics designed to protect the arch of the foot.
Other Treatments for Flat Feet
There are many manufacturers of insoles designed to support the flat footed arch. Many of the products on the market include a custom orthotic that cups around the arch but that does not extend the full length of the foot. Many people are not able to tolerate arches that run the full length of the foot. Also many flat footed patients are not able to tolerate the rigid structure of the orthotic. Please note that there are orthotics on the market that are flexible, comfortable and run the full length of the foot. Try to keep testing ones out until you find one that suits you.
