Common Golf Related Foot Injuries and Treatments

Shin Pain
Pain in the lower limb muscles is usually the result of excessive running after a period of immobility. Shin pain can also be the result of over prone feet. Over pronation of the feet can cause shin splints by putting undue pressures on the lower limb. Insoles and orthotics may take off these added pressures on the lower leg and treat shin pain.

Knee Pain
The hard twisting motion from a golf swing may put added pressures on the knee and cause knee pain. Inadequately fitting shoes may also contribute to knee pain. Discontinuing golfing for a while is often the first treatment option. If you can, consult with an expert in a sports medicine for an evaluation of your golf injury.

Lower Back Pain
The aggressive twisting motion can sometimes cause pain in your shoulders and lower back. During a golf swing, there is a lot of twisting as your shoulders swivel around the hips. This aggressive twisting motion can put undue pressures on the lumbar area of your back. Data from the US RGA tour identifies lower back pain as the most common golf injury.

Swelling of the Arm Joints
The most common cause of injury to a body's joints is overuse. The most common treatment for overused joints is rest. The same is true of the pain and swelling of arm joints caused by golfers playing on hard surfaces. Physical therapy is often employed with good results for treating swelling of the arm joints.

Foot Pain
Along with knee pain, foot pain is among the most common golf related injuries. Specific ailments of the foot include:
  • Foot Tendonitis. Foot tendonitis is inflammation and discomfort at the site of the front of the foot.
  • Heel Pain. Heel pain is doe to an extreme pronation of the foot. The inflammation from heel pain radiates from the middle of the heel. Golf frequenters will often feel heel pain when getting out of bed of after long intervals of staying in one place.
  • Morton's Neuroma. Morton's neuroma is a swelling of the nerve between the metatarsal bones. The metatarsal bones are located at the sole of the foot. This condition often worsens for golfers who are taking long walks along the golf course.
Treatment for Golf Injuries
Orthotics and custom made insoles are designed around the individual feet. They are made from custom molds of the feet and provide support for the feet, knees, hips, and entire body. They help to stabilize your feet during a golf swing and during long walks down the fairway.
