Metatarsalgia - Pain in the Ball of the FootOften we have all experienced some degree of pain in the front of our foot from standing or walking too long. Metatarsalgia is a term that describes a painful condition in the area of the foot where the metatarsals are. The metatarsal area is the area before the toe of the foot. This area before the toes of the foot is also called the ball of the foot. The foot disorder metatarsalgia refers to an inflammation of the area before the toes and the resulting pain felt from the individual. The foot pain from metatarsalgia refers to an inflammation of the area before the toes and the resulting pain felt from the individual. The foot pain from metatarsalgia is caused by an inflammation of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th metatarsal heads, or from inflammation of the big toe. The cause of this condition is most often from chronic abuse - from too much pressure to this area for a prolonged period of time. This discomfort can occur once and get better of become a chronic condition. This ball of the foot pain usually occurs from shoes that do not fit properly. One of the most common culprits of ball of the foot pain is from women's dress shoes, which squeeze the toes in and put added pressures on the forefoot. Women's shoes have a narrow toe box which forces the toes together into a small space. This can obstruct a free range of motion while walking and cause added pressures on the forefoot. There are other causes of metatarsalgia that result from different types of pressures on the forefoot. Other pressure causing causes include high heeled shoes and strenuous exercises without the proper sneakers or boots. Another factor is age as the fat pads in our foot thin over time. This smaller cushion makes us more prone to pain in the ball of the foot from walking or running. Treating and Preventing Metatarsalgia The first step in treating metatarsalgia is to discover the source of the discomfort. If the source is the shoes or sneakers, then more properly fitting footwear must be selected. Try to select shoes with a cushioned sole to take off some of the pressures on the forefoot. If the shoes you buy does not come with soles with an adequate cushion, there are quality soles to buy and custom orthotics to insert into them. There are a number of products on the market that are designed to take off some of the pressures on the forefoot. Orthotics with a metatarsal pads are custom designed to relieve pressure from the metatarsal joints. The orthotic is designed with a pad that will rest behind the ball the foot and redistribute weight from the painful sections of the foot. If you try any of these products with a significant amount of pain relief, consult your physician. |
