Foot Care Essentials - Foot Care Basics

Treat your feet with the care they deserve. With proper care, your feet should remain odor free and pain free. Here are some simple steps to take in order to have healthy feet.
  • Wash your feet every day. Wash your feet under the nails and between the toes.
  • Dry your whole foot after cleaning them. Dry your feet between the toes. Bacteria and fungus need moisture to grow.
  • Inspect your feet daily for any foot problems that may arise. Inspect your feet for calluses, blisters, corns, swelling or other problems that may arise.
  • Always wear fresh socks.
  • If you have problems with cracked dry skin on your feet, use a good moisturizer on them at various points in the day.
  • Try to stay within a normal range for your body weight. Those extra pounds can put a lot of pressure on your feet.
  • Cut your nails properly. A proper method of nail cutting is to cut them straight across. After cutting your nails, smooth out the corners with a nail file. Cutting your nails properly will lower the risk of getting an ingrown toenail.
  • Try to rotate your shoes in the summer months when it is hot or if you have issues with sweaty feet. Rotating your shoes will give them all a chance to dry and air out. Wearing dry shoes on your feet will help you to avoid athletes foot.
  • Devote a little bit of time each week to pamper your feet. A good massage will help to relax the muscles of your feet. Remember, your feet bear the weight of your whole body when walking or running. Oils like lavender, eucalyptus and peppermint help to revitalize the skin and the feet.
  • Rest your feet if you can if you are an active golfer or runner and have developed a joint related foot injury. A period of rest or taking it easy may help inflammation from a joint related foot injury subside.
  • Find a good lotion to run on your feet if you have problems with dry flaky skin. Use a product like The Ugly Little Bottle 3 or 4 times weekly to keep the skin on your feet moist and supple.
  • The most common problem seen by nail technicians at salons is nail calluses. To minimize calluses, smooth them out with a good nail file.
  • If you can, have a professional pedicure once a month if you can afford it.
  • Walk as much as you can. Walking will keep your weight down, get the blood flowing in your feet, and relieve the stress and anxiety caused by a crazy world.
