Sports Related Foot Injuries - Golf
Golf is not as demanding on the muscles and joints as some of the other sports. But golf has its own pressures on the hips, knees, and feet as some of the other contact sports. Golfers can put added pressures on their feet that will eventually lead to injuries.
How we move our bodies during a golf swing.
We make our golf swing starting with our feet pushing against the ground. We swing by whipping our body around using our feet and hips as pivot points. During a golf swing, the back foot is more prone during the follow through than the front foot.
An Efficient, Healthy Swing
In an efficient swing, your body's weight should be evenly distributed by both feet. As you lean forward, you should lean on the front of your feet and the inner part of your feet.
Maintaining efficient foot alignment is also important for the downswing and contact position. When starting into your back swing, your weight should be redistributed towards the heel of the feet. The amount of weight distributed to the back f the feet should be about the same for both feet. You should also shift your weight slightly to the inside of your feet. Shifting weight to the outside during the backswing may cause improper contact with your club and the golf ball.
When you are into your backswing, your back foot should be in a locked position while your front foot is rolling to the inside. The front heel of the foot will allow your shoulder to turn during the back swing. The last step of the back swing ends with all the weight of the body distributed to the back foot, and end with an even distribution of weight between the front foot and the back foot. At the completion of the back swing the weight left on the front foot will be pressed to the inside.
During the downswing, the weight will be shifted to the front foot away from the back foot. Your body's momentum will bring your heel back to the ground.
The follow through of the swing involves a follow through that reverses weight from the outside in on the back foot on the back foot and weight from the inside out on the front foot. Common golf injuries include knee problems, skin problems, inflammation of the arm joints, inflammation of the knee joints, pain in the feet, tenderness in the skin, and heel pain.
