Achilles Tendonitis and Foot Pain

A number of medical terms describe the affliction described as Achilles tendonitis, bursitis and tenosynovitis. These terms describe pain and inflammation on the Achilles tendon on the heel of the foot.

The Achilles tendon is a bundle of connective tissues where the Gastrocnemius and the sole muscle at the posterior of the leg places in to the heel bone. A number of mechanical changes and pressures on the leg may cause an inflammation of the Achilles tendon. Some pressures on the tendon include too much outward or inward bending of the heel, obesity and overworking of the surrounding muscles. Other systemic diseases like gout, arthritis and diabetes can cause an inflammation of the Achilles tendon. However, most cases are related to overuse and the wear and tear on the tissues from age and over exercising.

There are some products that are effective in promoting the healing of the tendon. An Achilles tendon strap is good to use in physical exercise related injuries such as jogger's injuries. An achilles tendon strap supplies focused compression on the achilles tendon while applying lift to the posterior of the heel. The achilles strap wraps around the heel and is a good stress reducer where the heel connects to the achilles tendon. A good heel strap will be easily adjustable to provide the right quantity of support.

Certain types of footwear like high heels may cause the achilles tendon to shorten in length. Any high heels over 1 inch puts a greater burden on the foot. The person whose achilles tendon was shortened from high heeled shoes may feel even more pain when going to a lower heeled shoe. Therapy in this case would include lengthening the tendon with stretching exercises. Night shin splints are often used to help stretch out the achilles tendon while the person is sleeping. Surgery may be an option when the tendonitis is attributed to the shortening of the tendon.

When achilles tendonitis is caused by an over supination and pronation of the foot, orthotics may be used to help restore mechanical functioning and balance. The tendonitis may be treated with conservative therapies such as ice packs, pain medication, and Boswalla creams and capsules.
