Proper Footwaer for Foot Care
Choosing the right shoe that matches your feet contours and running style will help in the treatments of athletes foot and foot care. Several shoes should be sampled to determine a comfortable fit.
Things to look for when sampling athletic shoes.
- Check for a proper shoe length. You should be able to fit your thumb at the end of your shoe and the big toe.
- The toe box should allow the big toe to rotate in the shoe.
- If you wear orthotics, wear the shoes in the store with the orthotics.
- If you wear orthotics with your shoes, buy shoes with insoles that can be removed and can have a good insert with the orthotics.
- If in doubt on the right shoe fit err on the side of a larger shoe. Always try to avoid shoes with poor circulation.
- Don't buy a shoe that may be uncomfortable in the store buy that you can "break in" at home. Try to find a shoe that is comfortable from the moment you put them on.
- If you can, take a jog in in the shoes, in or outside of the store. Do they feel good?
- The Shoe should be just the right width at the widest part of the foot. Here the shoe should be snug enough for control and balance but should not be too tight and compromise circulation.
- The heel cup should fit well, the heel of the foot should not be slipping or rubbing up against the back of the shoe.
- Try several brands or models towards getting the best fit and traction to the road, all have their own unique features and strengths.
- Many people have one foot that is longer than the other. If this is the case, have both feet measured.
- Make sure the athletic shoes flex properly around the areas where the foot flexes.
- When do my running shoes need to be replaced? This depends on a number of factors such as how often you use your shoes for running. First check for the amount of wear and tear in the midsole of the foot. The first area of the shoe to wear out is the midsole. The amount of creasing in the midsole is a good indicator of the shoes age and when it needs to be retired. Also monitor the stability of the shoes in their twisting and turning. Generally, shoes should be replaced after 1000km of jogging or every six months.
