The Ten Commandments for Foot Care Hygiene
- Have foot care evaluations from your physician regularly. Try to find a certified podiatrist in your area.
- Trim your nails. Trim the nails directly across, to avert ingrown toenails. Search for quality toenail scissors.
- Get a quality file for the thickened skin at the bottom of your feet. Treat calluses and corns swiftly. Trim them with products for corn and callus treatment. Blades and other tools may lead to infections and make the matters worse.
- Use the right insoles, footwear, nylons and socks. Find products that are not constrictive or that put too much pressure on the feet.
- Treat abrasions and blisters right away. See a physician if the wounds do not close and heal. Open wounds can cause the breakdown of skin.
- Keep your feet clean and dry. Bath your feet in soap and water regularly, Use only luke-warm water to wash your feet.
- Care for athletes foot if the symptoms arise. Change your footwear regularly, even daily if possible. Make sure your footwear is clean and dry after using them. If you have issues with sweaty feet and moisture in your shoes, use powder in them when they are not in use. Wear socks that will help the moisture in sweaty feet and shoes evaporate quickly. See a foot specializing physician if these conservative treatments don't help.
- Scan your feet for possible problems daily. Check directly or with a mirror if necessary for abrasions, bunions, corns, ingrown toenails, or any other possible foot problems.
- Be vigilant about maintaining a good circulation on your feet and lower leg. Wear footwear designed to promote good circulation. Extra large socks and shoes that have a wide enough toe box for your feet to breath well promote good circulation. Also maintain a healthy lifestyle. High blood pressure and cholesterol and nicotine smoke may harm the body and hinder good circulation. Massaging the body and feet may also promote good circulation.
- Be ever vigilant about your foot care, and always be on the lookout for any foot problems.
