Neuropathy and Treatment Options

Neuropathy is the primary cause of limb loss in those affected with diabetes. Neuropathy progresses through various stages beginning with the loss of limb sensation in the lower extremities. In the U.S., 25% of people afflicted with diabetes develop foot problems. Most foot problems with diabetics are attributed to neuropathy. The most prevalent form affects the peripheral nerves and describes peripheral neuropathy. Peripheral nerves originate in the spinal chord and brain and extend out to the muscles, internal organs, glands and skin. Sensory nerves and motor function are impaired from neuropathy. Neuropathy patients lose feeling in their hands and feet from these impairments.

As neuropathy progresses, diabetics with neuropathy lose sensitivity and ability to distinguish hot from cold. Diabetics can have difficulty protecting themselves from blisters and abrasions because they do not feel them developing and are slow to adjust. Minor cuts in diabetics can become very serious and may lead to amputation, Neuropathy may contribute to charcot feet, hammer toes, and bunions.

Because diabetics are always at a higher risk of having minor cuts and scrapes turn serious, they must be very diligent in their foot care maintenance. Diabetics should inspect for abrasions every day. Diabetics with good foot care maintenance are at a reduced risk for more complications.
First on the list for preventing neuropathy is to control blood sugar levels and to maintain a healthy blood pressure. Patients that control the disease are at a reduced risk. Also, it helps to
  1. Control your alcohol consumption.
  2. Do not consume nicotine products.
  3. Have physicals on a regular basis.
  4. Exercise as much as you can.
Other treatments that are beneficial are to walk and exercise with quality footwear and quality orthotics. Try to find shoes that are high and wide in the forefoot, have tough stable heel counters and soles that are flexible and strong. Also, try to find soles that disperse equal amounts of pressure throughout the foot.
