Where Do All Our Foot Problems Start?
Humans began walking on two feet about 1 million years ago. When our feet first took on this extra load, for the first time we were able to perform more abilities with our hands, and societies were created. With civilization came the first footwear that could protect us from injury and cold. The first footwear was fashioned from animal skins into simple sandals. As time has gone by, shoes have gone from providing protection for the feet to being worn for status and style. Early actors have worn platform shoes to stand out on the stage in theatricals. Women have worn high heels as a symbol of quality and mobility. Today's high heels tend to be very rough on women's feet and legs and arches. As many as 80% of foot problems occur in women.
Men have had their own foot ailments. The excessive weight bearing professions like construction can put great pressure on the feet. These added pressures can facilitate the hardening of skin into calluses and other foot problems.
Obesity and non-active lifestyle can also lead to excess to added pressures for the feet to absorb. Also, wearing improper footwear in the workplace can cause painful foot problems, and contribute to hundreds or thousands of downtime work hours.
Compounding these problems is the improper athletic shoes of the "weekend warrior". Also, wearing the wrong footwear in the workplace can cause painful problems for the workers. Hundreds of hours a year of downtime from work can result from foot problems. Millions of dollars per year are lost in any given industry, due to foot problems.
