Genetics, Heredity, and Diabetes

You may have noticed others in your family that have contracted diabetes if you have it. You may have noticed a number of people in a given family that have developed diabetes. You may have diabetes and be worrying about your children contracting this disease as well.

Unlike some other diseases like schizophrenia, there does not appear to be a direct link between diabetes and genetics. But some people may be predisposed to diabetes based on obesity, among other factors.

What causes diabetes?
Certain people are predisposed to developing diabetes due to a number of genetic factors. Being predisposed to this disease does not necessarily mean that you will eventually experience symptoms sooner or later. With a healthy lifestyle, you may be able to avoid an environment that causes the disease to be triggered.

If genetics were the sole cause for the development of diabetes, one would expect an almost 100% similarity in identical twins. That is not the case. For type 1 cases, when one develops diabetes, the other one is only observed to develop diabetes 50% of the time. When one twin develops type 2 diabetes, the other develops the disease 75% of the time. The results clearly show there are environmental stimuli other than genetics that can trigger the disease.

Type 2 Diabetes
There is a stronger prevalence of twins and family members sharing diabetes if the other one develops the disease. But there has been some research put forth already suggesting that there are some triggers. For example, Americans and Europeans seem to have the highest incidence of type 2 diabetes in the world. A closely related finding is that Americans and Europeans have the highest rate of obesity in the world. Americans and Europeans have very high concentrations of fat and carbohydrates in their diets. Obese individuals are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than non-obese ones. The races of people in thew U.S. with the highest occurance of diabetes are Native Americans and African Americans.

Obesity is the most common cause of diabetes. Diabetes is especially prevalent in young obese individuals and those who have been obese for a number of years.

Type 1 Diabetes
In the majority of instances, people need to inherit the risk from both parents to develop type 1 diabetes. White Americans are more likely than non-whites to develop type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetics are more likely to develop the disease in the winter rather than in the summer months. Individuals who were not breastfed are more likely to develop type 1 diabetes.
