Proper Techniques for a Good Foot Massage

A good foot massage will make you more comfortable, reduce your stress levels, sooth your spirits, soften your feet and put the spring back in your step. Since your feet bear all of the body's weight and pressures, a good foot massage will lead to a healthy foot and a healthy body. Even the founder of modern medicine, Hippocrates, advocates healing in saying, "The physician must be experienced in many things, but most assuredly in rubbing."

Foot Massage Techniques
A foot massage can be performed at any time in the day. You may have a partner perform a foot massage on you, or you may try the following exercise yourself.

If a partner is performing the foot massage, have them place a soft pillow on a bed or sofa or any place where you can put your foot up comfortably. Put the pillow in a place where you will be able to relax your whole body. Place your foot on the pillow.

If you are going to be performing the foot massage techniques yourself, find a comfortable chair, recliner, or other piece of furniture that you will be able to sit in or prop your foot up comfortably. Sit with one foot in your lab and rotate the foot you are rubbing until they are singing your praise.

Have towels on hand and under the foot being massaged to keep the furniture and clothing clean. Complete all of the foot massage techniques on one foot before moving to the other. Perform all of these foot massage techniques to revitalize your feet.
  1. Stroking. This technique involves a firm stroking motion between your thumbs. This technique stimulates circulation and warms the feet.
  2. Ankle Rotations. This Technique involves rolling the foot gently until any stiffness in the foot recedes.
  3. Toe pulls and squeezes. This technique involves gently pulling the toes out and is very calming to the feet and body.
  4. Toe slides. This technique involves inserting your finger between the toes to relax the feet.
  5. Arch press. In this technique, you use the heel of your hand and roll it along the arch of the foot in the arches of the foot. This technique reduces tension in the arches of your foot.
  6. Stroking. This step is identical to the first step described above.
