Causes and Treatment For Haglund's Deformity
Haglund's deformity is more commonly known as "Hump Bump". It diagnoses from the presence of a painful enlargement on the back of the heel bone. This painful bump can be irritated on the back of the inside of the shoe.
Haglund's Deformity shows up on the heel as painful, red, and swollen. This irritated area is located on the back of the heel bone. Some of these symptoms may develop after exercise, due to an inflammation of the Achilles Tendon. This irritation develops most often in females in their 30s, due to the rigid heel counter rubbing up against the heel bone.
Haglund's Deformity can be observed in an X-Ray and upon medical examination. The doctor may compare one result against the other and come up with a proper course of treatment.
Haglund deformity may be present at birth or may develop as the result of footwear or exercise and wear and tear. A heel bone that naturally has a bump on its back may be more prevalent to injury by a hard heel of the shoe. Shoe selection is often the primary cause for the injury. A Haglund's bump may get bigger and more irritated from rubbing up against an inflexible heel counter, exacerbating the injury. This irritation can progress from irritation to an inflamed fluid filled sack called bursitis. The bursitis can cause so much pain to the point of disability. Bursitis can even make it difficult to wear any type of shoes with backs.
Treatment for mild causes of bursitis and Haglund's Deformity may include picking out shoes that cause less irritation on the heel, soaking the foot in water and anti inflammatory to help reduce the swelling. Placing a heel lift in the shoe may help to raise the bump over the area of the shoe it was rubbing against. If all conservative treatments have been exhausted, surgery may be tried to shave off the excess bone around the heel.
The best way to prevent Haglund's Deformity may be to choose shoes that will prevent symptoms from reoccurring. Try to avoid shoes with hard backs if possible. If there is a huge bump on the heel, one must utilize shoes with soft backs, or the bony growth must be removed surgically.
