Causes and Treatment of Hammer Toe
A Hammer Toe is a toe that is contracted at the pip joint the middle joint in the toe, This can cause the toe to curl up, causing pain and severe pressure. With hammer toe, the ligaments and toes contract, causing the toe to curl downwards. Only the big toe is exempt from developing hammer toe. Discomfort can occur while wearing shoes when the hammer toe rubs up against the top of the shoe.
Hammer toes are identified by the flexibility of the toe joints, There are two classifications of hammer toe, rigid hammer toe and flexible hammer toe. With flexible hammer toe, a person can still move the joint automatically and manually. With rigid hammer toe, the affected toe is very inflexible and any type of movement is extremely painful. This inflexibility can cause different parts of the foot to take an excess weight bearing, possibly causing calluses and soreness.
There are a number of possible causes of hammer toes, First there may be a muscle imbalance in the foot structure, causing the tendons and ligaments to contract and tighten. The joint then curls downwards as the ligaments shorten. Another possible cause of hammer toes would be arthritis.
The first step towards the treatment of hammer toes would be a change in the shoes you wear. If you are already afflicted with hammer toe, make sure to leave plenty of space in the toe areas where the toes can move freely and not rub up against the roof of the shoe. Try to find shoes that will provide space in the foot area so the toes will not rub up against the roof and sides of the shoe.
Hammer toe crests and hammer toe splints also work well to relieve some of the painful symptoms of hammer toe. These products provide some relief to the front of the foot, Other treatments that may help to remove friction against the top and sides of the shoe are gel toe caps and gel toe shields. Gel toe caps and gel toe shields may provide lubrication and comfort.
Please consult your physician if these treatments fail to provide relief to the symptoms of hammer toe.
