Treatment and Prevention of Mallet Toes
Prevention and Treatment of Mallet foot. Mallet Feet.
Mallet Toe Disorder is one of many that can affect the joints of the feet. Mallet Toes is a structural change of the forefoot that can cause various levels of pain and dysfunction. A mallet toe occurs when the last of the toe becomes damaged and the toe curls up. When this happens, the individual is unable to straighten their toes. These structural changes make it more difficult to walk properly. This curling can cause excess rubbing against the roof and floor of the shoe, causing blisters and corns.
Origin of Mallet Toes
Like other foot disorders affecting the joints of the foot, the origin of the problem is bone and muscle imbalances. People very physically active can further contribute to the disorder by putting added pressures on the forefoot. People with poorly selected shoes and people who spend a lot of time standing put added pressures on their forefoot.
Management of Mallet Toes
Any foot problem involving the joints of the foot should be treated promptly. Untreated, the problem will get worse and many of the pain symptoms will increase. Untreated, the joint tissues may wear down and cause permanent damage. Some of the symptoms of mallet toes like corns and blisters may become infected if this disorder becomes chronic. The first line of treatment would be the selection of footwear that will compensate for the disorder. Patients should select shoes with a high toe roof so that the toes do not rub up against roof of the shoe. Patients should select footwear that will take off some of the pressures on the forefoot and reduce pressures where the mallet toes are.
Shoes with a wide toe box will also help to take off some of the added pressures caused by mallet toes. Other treatments include gel toe shields, gel toe crests and gel toe caps. Custom orthotic supports for the forefoot will also help to provide relief.
If you have attempted these conservative treatments without success, consult your physician.
