Diabetic Meal Planning for the Holiday Seasons

Holidays can be tough for individuals dealing with diabetes. Travel and holiday meals may divert diabetics from their maintenance programs and usual routines. But there's no reason that you should be unable to keep up with a healthy diabetic diet during the holidays.

Here are some suggestions on thriving during the holiday seasons and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Holiday Groundwork
The essential thing about diabetic management during the holidays is to plan ahead. The more you prepare ahead, the better you can plan for a healthy lifestyle. Below are a few things to look for.

Programs
What is your family program like for the holidays? Are you flying or traveling long distances? Are you having guests staying over? Do you host events like football games that make you more active than you usually are? Do you attend lots of events like parties where you eat more than you usually do? If you get a chance, try to plan ahead for physical activities and meals that will differ from your current schedule and compensate accordingly.

Meals
Try to plan ahead for the meal choices you will have during your holiday dinners. Do you have meals that you usually eat or make during a holiday? You may need to just make small adjustments to your holiday meals in order to maintain your health. Preparation for your meals may be very helpful. You may still be able to eat your usual holiday meals that have high concentrations of carbohydrates, but in smaller servings. Or you may choose some of your favorite meals like casserole but with fat free toppings instead of the regular ones. Try to add vegetables to your meals as side dishes as opposed to tomatoes or gravy.

There are a number of ways to lower carbohydrate counts, fats and sugars in your favorite dishes and still have satisfying meals. You may enjoy some of your mother's world famous brownies, but in smaller serving sizes. The most common means of compensating for seasonal meals includes…
  1. Compensating with increased physical activities.
  2. Increasing insulin doses
  3. Eating less of high fat meals or deserts that you enjoy
  4. A blend of all three methods
