Treating Nails With Chronic Paronychia
A chronic paronychia is an infection of the nail. A chronic paronychic infection is a slow spreading infection that affects the skin around the nail. The skin around the nail will become swollen, red, and tender. Chronic paronychia is usually created by a fungus. These fungi are usually Candida, mildew, or molds. Chronic paronychia can affect one of the nails, or even spread to all of them. Diabetics are at an increased risk for developing chronic paronychia. Others at a high risk include construction workers, gardeners, or others with constant exposure to chemical solutions. Janitors, bartenders, house cleaners, cooks, nurses and hair dressers are at an increased risk because of their occupation.
Chronic paronychia is found in 3 groups
- Ingrown Toenails. Ingrown toenails are the most common cause of chronic paronychia. The condition of chronic paronychia will cause a thickening, swelling and redness of the eponychial fold. When this happens there may be a degeneration of the cuticle. The presence of granulation tissue may be observed. Individuals susceptible to this disorder have a job or lifestyle where their hands or feet are frequently moist. Other susceptible to this disorder are those exposed to continuous stresses or shocks.
- Acute paronychia. Acute paronychia usually affects the fingers. Acute paronychia is particularly painful. Acute paronychia is the result of pyrogenic bacteria that has gotten under the skin. The resulting infection is very painful and can cause abscesses under the skin. These abscesses develop between the germinal layer of the eponychial sac and the eponychial fold. This infection may cause cellulites under the skin. There may also be pus developing at the site of the infection.
- The last form of paronychia is called a subungal abscess. A subungal abscess is observed between the nail bed and the nail plate.
Treatment of chronic paronychia
Most treatment products for chronic paronychial nails work to revitalize the nails. There are some quality creams on the market that are designed to regenerate damaged nails. If you have any of the forms of paronychia, look for creams designed to treat chipped, broken, ridged and weak nails.
In the case of fungus found within the nails, search for products with ingredients including panthenol, wheat germ oil, and bisobolol. Research suggests that bisobolol helps to revitalize cuticles and nails.
