Delaying or Preventing the onset of Type 2 Diabetes

Diabetes is one of the most financially resource consuming and debilitating long term diseases in the United States and world wide. The most common cause of type 2 diabetes is morbid obesity. The medical consequences of type 2 diabetes involve peripheral vascular disease, coronary heart disease, stroke, hypertension, obesity, and dislipidemia.

Strategies Towards the Prevention of Diabetes. Most or all strategies to control diabetes involve lifestyle modification and glucose-lowering medications. Most studies thus far demonstrate lifestyle modifications to be more effective over glucose lowering drugs.

Lifestyle Modification
In two medical studies, well performed lifestyle changes were shown to cause a drastic lowering of the prevalence of diabetes. These results were shown to lower the prevalence of diabetes even when the person's lifestyle changes produce only a moderate reduction in the weight of the obese individuals. In studies performed in multiple countries, exercise of moderate levels (30 minutes/day) and weight loss programs that produced even 10 pound drops were enough to reduce the prevalence of diabetes.

Although diabetes can be delayed or prevented with only incremental changes in weight and obesity, it was documented that many individuals were only able to achieve behavioral changes under the supervision of a trained staff. Diabetes patients in these studies have shown considerably less compliance to behavioral modification programs when they are just given the information and are under little supervision. Diabetes prevention and treatment programs were more successful when individuals would have consistent sessions with a nutritionist, trainers to help them increase their physical activity, individually tailored physical therapy sessions, and access to a local gym or local exercise club.

Successful participants in behavior modification programs for diabetes would meet consistently with a diabetes educator in person and through phone contacts at least once per month, Any individuals having difficulty meeting certain milestones in the program were given special incentives as motivation such as free low calorie foods, exercise equipment and tapes, free membership to fitness clubs, closely supervised meal plans, and home visits for emotional support and education.

The studies mentioned above suggest many positive and negative ways of interpreting the results. On the positive side, even incremental in lifestyle can either prevent the onset of diabetes altogether or delay the disease for up to ten years. On the other hand, the studies reported a surprisingly low percentage of people successfully following the program even when they were closely supervised and all the products that were needed to implement the program were given free of charge. Even under the most ideal of circumstances, many were not motivated to follow the diabetic behavior modification program.
