Smelly Toenail Fungus and Smelly Feet

Toenail fungus, known by doctors as Onychomycosis, afflicts about 50% of people by the age of 65. The toenail fungi can work its way under the toes and thrive because they do not need sunlight to grow. Toe nail fungus feeds off protein inside the toe.

Onychomycosis can penetrate the nail and make it difficult to walk and work. This fungus can grow and make the toe thicker, causing discomfort while wearing footwear. Also, where fungus is found, a bacterium often follows. You may find both germs together often.

Symptoms of toenail fungi include browning, yellowing, toenail thickening, streaks and spots down the side and sometimes the loss of the toenail. Fungi germs may affect all of the nails, including the fingers, but toenail fungi are the toughest to eliminate because toes grow more gradually. The big and small toes are the most often affected.

Toenail fungi may be caught in damp areas like locker room showers and recreation center pool areas and can be passed from person to person in these damp areas. Objects like constrictive foot wear, tight nylons, and tight socks can cause abrasions to the feet and keep them from airing out. Constrictive and abrasive footwear put people at a higher risk of developing a fungus.

Other factors of high risk involve fluctuations in the acidity of the skin, not drying feet thoroughly after exercise, not drying feet after pool activity and systemic diseases that lower immune system functioning. People with lowered immune system functioning have a harder time fighting off fungi and other germs. Diabetics with foot fungus should have their nails clipped and debrided by a physician.

The most reliable treatment for toenail fungus prevention is prevention. Be sure to wear your sandals in shower and pool areas, do not share your clothing and shoes with others and always wear clean dry shoes and socks. Try to change your shoes and socks even during the day if necessary. Clean your feet often, and wash them after they get wet. Avoid nail polish if you have issues with toenail fungus. Nail polish can trap fungus in the nail. A podiatrist may trim or remove the section of the nail with the fungi growth. Anti fungal medications may be prescribed by your doctor. In severe cases, the doctor may want to remove the entire nail.
