Why Do We Sweat? Why Do We Have Smelly Feet?
Sweat
Sweat is the moisture that comes through the pores of our skin, especially when suffering from high temperatures or high anxiety. We sweat during athletic activity in order to maintain an equilibrium in body temperature. When the heat begins to rise in our body, the hypothalamus sends signals to the brain to make us sweat. When we sweat, water covers the body, and heat produced by the body evaporates the sweat to cool us down.
Sometimes, the type of footwear and socks we are wearing can make us sweat more. If water in our shoes gets trapped around our feet, and cannot evaporate as it usually does. Sweat is mostly water, but does contain small amounts of other substances like salts, body oils, urea and sugars.
Eventually the water will evaporate off around the feet with enough time or more quickly when we take our shoes off. But the non-water residue often remains. This residue contains organic substances that erode and waste away slowly, causing foot odor. Sweat can rapidly cause foot odor because of the germs working on it. These germs enjoy warm moist environments to grow and thrive. The inside sole of the shoes is an ideal environment for fungi and bacteria to grow, as it is hot and wet. Bacterium is always around, even migrating in the air, and these germs can travel from person to person in shared spaces, like locker rooms and showers. The eating of the various substances and dead tissues produces the foot odor that we have all experienced.
Different bacteria produce different smells coming from the feet. The most common bacteria for foot odor has a similar odor as the bacteria that breaks down cheese, leading to the name "Cheesy Feet". There is "Farmers Smell" caused by excessive sweaty feet, with the cloth becoming very warm and moist. Bacteria will also try to break the materials that the fungus and moisture cling to. An example would be the bacteria trying to eat our athletic shoes. Warm moisture can also precipitate the enlargement of fungus that causes "athletes foot", another foot problem that causes foot odor.
There are some key steps towards the management of sweaty feet and subsequent foot odor, shown here.
