Overlapping Toes. Treating Overlapping Toes. Many foot disorders affect the joints of the toes, causing pain and discomfort to the individual. Any type of inflammation in the joints of the feet could prevent the foot from functioning properly. Overlapping toes in one foot condition that affects the joints of the foot. People of any age can develop the condition of overlapping toes, and two or all of the joints may be affected. The longer the person affected with overlapping toes goes untreated, the more pain he or she may experience.Prevention and Treatment. Any joint problems of the forefoot or other areas of the body should be corrected as soon as possible. Untreated, the problem can aggravate the area and lead to infection or the deterioration of the joint and surrounding tissues. Conservative treatments include expanding the toe box at the forefoot to allow the toes to move as freely as possible. Footwear with a high and wide toe box are suggested to allow for as much free motion as possible. There are other non surgical treatments that aim to straighten the toes. Tow combs, toe straighteners, and gel toe caps are inserted into the shoes to attempt to correct this problem. These devices are designed to separate the toes so that they don't overlap. Keeping the toes straight will relieve discomfort by allowing for a more free range of motion and by reducing friction. If all conservative therapies have been attempted without results, consult your physician. Possible causes of overlapping toes The deformity of the foot known as overlapping toes can usually be observed in children of a very young age. Generally, this condition is hereditary and either the mother or the father will have this condition. Untreated, the condition will worsen in adulthood. Without surgical intervention, a child will usually carry the disorder into their adult life. This condition usually affects the fourth and fifth toes. Some patients may have overlapping toes in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th toes. The exact cause of a persons overlapping toes usually goes undiscovered. One possible cause may be muscle imbalances in the forefoot. There may also be abnormalities in the subtalar joint, located just below the ankle. These abnormalities in the subtalar joint can cause the toes to become misaligned. The ligaments can become misaligned and then start to curl back and forth. When the child gets older and bigger, this added weight can worsen the condition. |
