Treating Neuroma Pain
Treating Morton's Neuroma
Any type of neuroma involves a swelling of the nerve. Morton's Neuroma is caused by a swelling of the nerve that lies between the 3rd and 4th toes.
Symptoms of Morton's Neuroma
- Morton's neuroma may be caused by a stretching of the ligaments at the soles of the foot.
- High heels may stretch the tendons and ligaments of the foot.
- Any narrow shoe that squeezes the toes together may stretch feet ligaments.
- Overpronation may cause a misalignment of the joint structure and surrounding ligaments. An overpronated foot will turn the foot too far inwards while walking, flattening your arches, and pulling on the nerves.
Physical Signs of Morton's Neuroma
- An afflicted individual will feel pain or loss of feeling underneath the foot.
- At advanced stages of Morton's Neuroma the person will feel greater pain and numbness throughout the entire foot. The person may also experience tingling and burning that affects the entire foot.
- The burning and tingling from Morton's Neuroma may have a sudden rather than gradual onset.
- The discomfort and numbness may be greater standing or walking. The symptoms may be lessened when the patient is resting.
- The patient experiencing Morton's Neuroma may feel sudden shooting pains. These shooting pains may feel like an electric shock. Patients may be thrust out of their sleep from these sudden shocks.
Treatment Options for Morton's Neuroma
- To start, the podiatrist or foot specialist must correctly diagnose Morton's neuroma. Please be thorough when describing your own medical history and your foot problems to the foot specialist.
- A foot specialist will squeeze between the toes to inspect the nerve located between the third and fourth toes. The foot specialist can usually detect inflammation or misalignment by physically inspecting the sensitive area.
- MRI or other imaging techniques may be employed to rule out a bone fracture of the foot.
- If the diagnosis for Morton's Neuroma is determined, the patient may be tested for various orthotics and pads designed to take pressure off the nerve causing the numbness and tingling.
- In the most severe cases, surgery may be employed to fix the nerve that is causing the burning and numbness and pain.
