Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 Diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. In patients with type 2 diabetes, the body does not produce enough insulin or the body's cells ignore the insulin that is produced. Insulin is needed for the cells in our body to be able to transport and use sugar. Sugar powers the cells in our body. Insulin takes sugar from the blood and transports it to the cells. Two problems occur when the glucose accumulates in the blood stream instead of being absorbed into our cells:
  1. Immediately the cells are depleted of energy.
  2. Eventually, elevated blood glucose levels may damage your heart, kidneys and eyes.
Being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes can be frightening. The diagnosis is a cause for concern. But don't be alarmed yet. Under proper treatments conditions, diabetics can go on to long periods of health.

While type 2 diabetics affects individuals at all age groups and races, some are at an elevated risk over others. Type 2 diabetes is more prevalent in African Americans, Latinos, American Indians, Pacific Islanders and Asian Americans. Elderly residents are also at an increased risk.
