The Link Between Diabetes and Obesity
Research has demonstrated a strong link between obesity and diabetes. In fact, 9 out of 10 people diagnosed with type 2 diabetes are obese. If you are obese, some weight loss may help to manage diabetes. Weight loss may even help to reverse the early stages of type 2 diabetes.
"Weight Loss Matters" is a tip sheet for suggestions on weight loss and weight control to manage diabetes. This tip sheet contains suggestions on how to lose weight and keep it off. Before reading the tip sheet, consult your physician or diabetes consultant about losing weight. It is hard for some people to talk about their own obesity. But the "Weight Loss Matters" sheet should give you some useful suggestions. The "Weight Loss Matters" tip sheet is published by the "American Diabetes Association", at www.diabetes.org.
Here is an overview of suggestions about weight loss published by the American Diabetes Association.
- Learn what you can about the science of losing weight and exercise for weight loss.
- Find motivation to lose weight. Draw on your friends and life experiences for sources of motivation.
- Learn more about diet and exercise.
- Find out what options you have if you are severely obese. Your size or health level may hinder your ability to exercise. Check with your doctors and from other resources, there are options out there.
- Learn about how to use the Diabetic Food Pyramid and what portion sizes on the different groups you should eat to stay healthy, lose weight, and maintain a glucose balance.
- Find options from your doctor or health care provider about what options you may have in addition to diet and exercise. Some severely obese patients may not be able to lose weight on diet and exercise alone.
- Research all the aspects of a healthy diabetic diet and associated lifestyle. There may be many factors included in a healthy diabetic diet including portion sizes, adding a variety to your diet, and what time of day you are consuming your meals.
- Be out and Walking around. Be active. Be on the move. Learn about healthy exercises and which ones will give you a good workout without making you overdo it.
- Focus on healthy weight loss not just weight loss. Focus your lifestyle on activities that will help you lose weight and keep it off for years. Try not to jump at the latest diet fad designed to help you "lose 20 pounds in 20 days." Most of these fad diets are unhealthy, especially to a diabetic.
